A survey by DoubleClick on the effect of spam on email users has shown that women and men respond differently to spam. Women are more likely to read and respond, explains Usability News.
"Men and women have radically different ideas of what spam is and different purchasing behaviour related to spam. Women are more receptive to promotions and discounts and correspondingly more interested in and tolerant of marketing emails than men."
Other key points of the survey were:
- Frequency tolerance (i.e. the point at which a user says "this company is sending me marketing emails too often") varies dramatically from individual to individual.
- The main factor determining whether a user will open an email is whether he or she recognises the sender company.
- Many email users are availing of spam-management tools offered by their internet service providers.
Nevertheless, I suspect that the spam wars are only beginning...

I was just looking through your entry about celbrity blogs.
Did you know Wil Wheaton has one (Wesley Crusher off The Next Generation) + Bill Bailey (English comedian) has started one, though he's a bit crap at updating.
Wil Wheaton's also has a message board which has spawned it's own book!!
Or is there a reason why they aren't on the list?
Sorry this is such a late, late refernce to the entry, I was actually searching for 'famous blogs' and found your entry!!
Thanks for that Mr. Juggles. I had not added Will Wheaton before because I thought he was "simply" an A-list blogger, not a celebrity as such.
But now that I've seen his site, I recognise him of course.
I also took the opportunity to get rid of William Gibson, as he has stopped blogging (sadly).
I didn't add Bill Bailey as he has only entered three posts so far! If he manages to take the blogging more seriously, I'll pop him on the list...
Yeh, it's a shame about bill bailey. I was sort of looking forward to him doing some good. Oh, well
